2018 Topps Archives Baseball Jumbo Hanger Pack

How big of a mistake do you have to make to have to push pack a hobby release of your product by two months over retail?  I can only imagine, but it is Topps we're talking about.  We'll have to see what they add to make it worth our wile.  Anyways I happen to be at a major retailer and noticed they had hanger packs of Archives so I picked one up.  18 cards lets see what I got.  Topps features the '59, 77, and 81 designs this year and my all time favorite player, Robin Yount, even gets a card.  Too bad they couldn't feature him on the 59 designs, especially since he had cards in both the 77 and 81 sets.  Spoiler I didn't pull Robin.  I did manage one Brewer for my team set.

Interestingly all the 59's were group together in the packs, as the same for the 77 and 81's.  But we'll mix it up.

Like most hanger packs you get a couple inserts.  I got this, not released so long ago Rookie History reprint of Bryce Harper.  I really wish Topps would have numbered this set maybe down by the bottom on the back by the reprint, so we know what card it was in the set.

And my other inserts was this Amed Rosario Coming Attractions.

1996 Score Board All Sport PPF

Another 50 cent pack I picked up Labor Day weekend at my LCS Don's Sportcards.  This was the only pack of Score Board on the table.  Didn't pull any hockey, but as a bonus I did pull a couple guys I've heard of.

A kind of Todd Walker rookie card.  For whatever reason I always think of this 20 year retired vet as a Rockie.

Couple of footballers I've actually heard of as well.

1991 ProSet PGA Tour Cards

Stopped in to my LCS, Don's Sportcards, here in Anchorage while out running some errands on Saturday.  You never know what you're going to find at Don's.  He just happen to have a table set up heaped with old miscellaneous packs for 50 cents a piece.  I'll be featuring a bunch of them over the next couple weeks. First up is a set I know I never opened a pack of before.  Pro Set's 1991 PGA tour cards.

The cards themselves are acutally quite handsome.  From my small sampling the photograph is great and the overall design is pretty simple.  Not only that but the name banners are color coded.  The main tour gets these minty green banners, the seniors tour gets a darker more teal like color, and they even have gold banners for award winners.  I'll be honest I'm not a huge golf fan and I didn't recongize the majority of the players I pulled.

As promoted on the front of the back every pack featured a 10 cent discount card.

1991 Pro Set Promo Pack

Nothing says 1991 more than Pro Set, which was at the height of its powers in the early '90s before their inevitable collapse. I also think that no one made more promo cards than this company. This is a pack that I found at the bottom of some box I've had for decades. It looks to have been released to promote all of their products, as you'll see in a bit.

1 - Emmitt Smith (Pro Set Gazette) - As far as I can tell, this is the only actual promo card in the pack. The rest of the cards appear identical to their set counterparts and are probably not unique in any way, although you can never really tell with Pro Set. It's an interesting concept for a set even if it was never realized. There's no stats -- instead, you just have a write-up that you might find in a local newspaper.

186 - Tom Barrasso (Hockey) - This is a really cool overheard shot of the Penguins goalie. There were both French and English language versions of this set. This is the English version.

98 - Car 26 Quaker State (Racing) - I'm not even going to pretend to know anything about auto racing. The car is green. You don't see that every day.

83 - Nelson (MusiCards) - This is familiar territory to me. I believe at one point I bought a whole box of this stuff. I still probably have some of it somewhere, if I didn't throw it away. I wasn't actually interested in almost any of the music in this set at the time (Nelson?!), but I still bought the cards just the same.

75 - Curtis Strange (Golf) - That Nike shirt goes really well with the card border color. It really does. I was always more of a fan of video game golf than actual golf, so I probably didn't watch Strange do his thing too often.
