1995 Donruss Series 1

50 cents for a pack of full-bleed mid-'90s Donruss? Sounds like a deal to me.

1 - David Justice (A mid-'90s star. He gets card #1.)

202 - Pedro Martinez (Perhaps slightly less famous than the Pedro who is still alive and kicking today.)

197 - Woody Williams (Ex-Cardinal and overall sort of goofy guy.)

40 - Darrin Fletcher

176 - Terry Shumpert (Someone in an earlier post here made a comment about how the cards looked weird because they should have had the player names on the front. I should take this time to mention that the player names were on the front, and that my scanner doesn't really like foil all that much. Sorry about that.)

170 - John Hudek Rated Rookie

160 - Brent Butler Checklist

79 - Mark Whiten (Hard Hittin'!)

65 - Todd Hundley

88 - Rich Becker Rated Rookie

114 - Alex Rodriguez Rated Rookie (Occasionally Donruss gets one right.)

83 - Cal Ripken, Jr. (I was never a Ripken fan. I think I just had something against any SS that took attention away from Ozzie Smith. Note McGwire lurking in the background there...)

92 - Dennis Martinez (aka El Presidente)

105 - Danny Jackson

222 - Matt Whiteside

27 - Charles Johnson Rated Rookie (Johnson was a bit of a star at one point. That seems so strange.)

176 - Terry Shumpert (Again? This violates everything you could screw up in a pack short of damaged or missing cards.)

319 - John Patterson

1996 Pinnacle Full Motion Hologram

I'm back after a long hiatus filled with too much work, too much travel and too many pc problems. Enough of my headaches, though...let's get to the good stuff.

In 1996 Pinnacle produced Full Motion Hologram cards for Denny's. Packs contained one (yes, 1) card, oh and a thinner card which explained how to view the hologram card.
I picked up one pack and landed a Jeff Bagwell card. I gave it to my friend who happens to be a Jeff Bagwell collector (how convenient).

Do we really need instructions on how to view the holgram card?

1994 Fleer Ultra Beavis and Butt-Head

This is Deal from Phungo here with my first ever "A Pack to be Named Later" posting. I will likely most often be ripping baseball packs but after noticing all the variety present on APtbNL I decided to go with a non-sports pack.

And with that Team Phungo brings you a pack of MTV's 1994 Beavis and Butt-Head!

1994 Fleer Ultra MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head Wrapper

Notice the top 2 corners - on the Left the MTV logo, on the right the ubiquitous Fleer Ultra logo - circa 1994. Apparently Fleer really did produce anything during that era.

Also notice that neither Beavis nor Butt-Head have their traditional AC/DC or Metallica Garb. I have seen the Skull and Death Rock shirts on various Beavis and Butt-Head items due to licensing issues.

I found this pack at a card show and it had been double knocked down first to 1.79 and then to an even buck. A good price I thought, unfortunately I was pretty disappointed. For the most part the cards brought back little of the show - I could only vaguely connect about half the cards to episodes I remembered and if the backs contained any dialogue from the show, it wasn't familiar to me at all. As a whole I found the cards just plain dull, which was a real disappointment.

1994 Beavis and Butt-Head #8269 Lolita and Tanqueray
1994 Beavis and Butt-Head #6948 Biker

I had totally forgotten about Lolita and Tanqueray, and just seeing them made me laugh. However, it was the only card in the pack that brought a chuckle. And no I don't think there are 8000 cards in this set - every card either begins or ends with the number 69 - okay realizing that made me snicker. Although, had there been 8000 cards in the set, one could understand their lameness.

1994 Fleer Ultra MTV's Beavis & Butt-Head #4669 Closing Time
1994 Fleer Ultra MTV's Beavis & Butt-Head #3669 Drive in II

ok the art one is funny and I like the Yogurt one because my girlfriend is always trying to get me to eat the putrid stuff. The God one is a little funny too.

The Backs come in at least five different varieties. The portrait style backs came in at least 3 different Beavis and Butt-Head variations at the bottom.

Hopefully you can read these when you enlarge them. The Art and the God ones are sort of funny - the other two are mailed in - or maybe it's just not the same without the snickering and the huh uh huh, yeah! YEAH!

For the Collector
On ebay a box (36 packs of 10 cards) sold for $21.50 sealed.

################################

Ok - lets not have everyone click on Hall of Fame all at once. ("Yeah Butt-Head that might bring down the internet and that would suck, huh huh huh")

That does it for the first Phungo edition of "A Pack to be Named Later". There will be more and I will be looking for some baseball packs to post.

Bowman '48 Basketball (hobby)

I picked up a pack of these cards at the hobby shop tonight. I don't know much about these cards, but I like retro stuff and it looked like it might be fun to buy.

It advertises 8 cards per pack on the front. On the back it says that "...packs with a relic will contain 7 cards and Patch card will contain only 4 cards. Let's see how I do.

I really like the "Bowman '48" logo. It's like a "comic sans" or cartoonish type font and it really drew me in. I guess it's because of the red logo against a pale yellow pack that makes it really stand out. The fact that their is a generic retro basketball and net artwork instead of a player photo makes it more appealing to me.

I don't follow basketball that much, so I was just hoping to pull some players that I recognize or hopefully a Blake Griffin card.

My breakdown is as follows:

#4 Paul Pierce

My first impression of the cards is that they look and feel like the Topps Magic football cards or the Target retro Topps baseball cards. They have an "arch" to them instead of being stiff. They're kind of slick on the front with rough backs to them.

#78 Caron Butler

#20 Carmelo Anthony. At least I know this guy.

#9 Emeka Okafor

#76 Carlos Boozer. This one is a blue parallel numbered to 1795/1948.

Here's the back of the Boozer card just to give you an idea of what the backs look like.

They don't have scratch off trivia questions like in Topps Magic, but they do have "Bowman Facts" about the player, which is nice because not all the facts are about basketball.

# 17 Jason Kidd

#19 Chauncey Billups

... and lastly a

#47 Mike Miller

The cards remind me of Philadelphia Football a little too, except they don't have player or team names on the front. That's sort of the appeal of these cards to me. By not having that team or player identification and by having solid color backgrounds it really brings the focus to the players.

It looks like a nice product to try out and maybe pick up a few here or there.

2009 Topps Football Retail

I'm glad that this year Topps Football gets a unique design for their base set. Thinking about it, that maybe the reason that I've never really been interested in the base versions of the football sets because they are just rehashes of the baseball set.

2009 Score Football

Like my last pack, these go for about $1 a pack retail...I'm not even sure if there is a Hobby version of this product...there's got to be right? Anyway, this is just about the perfect product to get a kid interested in collecting. Flashy design, cheap price...it may just keep from from their Xbox for about 30 minutes.

I recently became an uncle to a child that I will make a card collector one way or another! Gee, that sounds like a treat...8-)

This stuff is $1.00 a pack at my go-to card shop in Topeka. I have a complete Tiger's Tales insert set already so this is just a pack to feed the habit.
